class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">R<\/span>ecently, I received a very interesting question regarding the safety of ingesting foods and beverages that have been exposed to smoke vapor using<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/?cat=62\"> hand-held food smokers<\/a>.\u00a0 Specifically, the question consisted of whether you need to be 18 years of age for items that have been infused with smoke using these gadgets.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5109\" style=\"width: 156px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5109\" class=\"wp-image-5109 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3615-e1544983917266-146x150.jpg\" alt=\"The breville handheld smoker\" width=\"146\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3615-e1544983917266-146x150.jpg 146w, https:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3615-e1544983917266-291x300.jpg 291w, https:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3615-e1544983917266.jpg 755w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-5109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">#handheldsmoker<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This got me thinking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>does the word<em> \u201csmoke\u201d<\/em> automatically give off the bad vibe response?<\/li>\n<li>why do people only inquire about the smoke without needing to know more about the plant source that produces that smoke?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is a lot of data out there on carcinogenic effect to high heat grilled foods like burgers, chicken, and steaks, even data on hot smoking foods at lower temperatures.\u00a0 Really, what it all boils down to is, if you grill meats to the point where you blacken them, that increases the risk for the carcinogens.\u00a0 Even if you cook to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bestfoodfacts.org\/nutrition-doesnt-have-to-go-up-in-smoke\/\">blacken state<\/a>, eating these foods in moderation will halt any real risk over an average person\u2019s lifetime.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>So why the question on legality to consume smoked foods and beverages?<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">I<\/span>f you understand that the tobacco industry had to start putting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fda.gov\/TobaccoProducts\/Labeling\/Labeling\/default.htm\">warning labels on tobacco packaging back in 1966, and smokeless tobacco products in 2010<\/a>, then you comprehend that smoke vapor does contain toxins.\u00a0 Everything regarding the level of toxicity with cooking is related to the type of food, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/diet\/cooked-meats-fact-sheet\">method of cooking, cooking temperature, and length of cooking time.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Let\u2019s examine those parameters from the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/?cat=62\"> handheld food smoking<\/a> perspective.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"wpsdc-drop-cap\">Y<\/span>ou are<em> not<\/em> cooking the food by this method, <em>merely infusing<\/em> it with the<em> smoke flavonoids<\/em>, so there is no temperature (cold smoking technique).\u00a0 You are not exposing the food to smoke vapor for hours \u2013 it really comes down to minutes.\u00a0 Most importantly, you are not directly attempting to inhale the smoke vapor into your lungs.\u00a0 Yes, if your standing near the container that is holding the cold smoke when you open it, you will have some exposure but not like the person that takes a drag directly from a tobacco product or is chewing on a tobacco product!<\/p>\n<p>Like anything else in our world, there are risks to everything we do, experience, sense, taste, explore, desire.\u00a0 Hot smoking is another name for <em>roasting<\/em> just at a lower temperature and usually with cheaper cuts of meat.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5037\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img
