Rather they use recycled material.<\/p><\/div>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\">WOOD SUPPLIER- ARE YOU GETTING WHAT YOU PAID FOR?<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2042\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/audio-button-.jpg\" alt=\"Listen to the audio of this blog\" width=\"68\" height=\"68\" \/><\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-2244-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ARE-YOU-GETTING-WHAT-YOU-PAID-FOR-BLOG-FULL-AUDIO.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ARE-YOU-GETTING-WHAT-YOU-PAID-FOR-BLOG-FULL-AUDIO.mp3\">https:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/ARE-YOU-GETTING-WHAT-YOU-PAID-FOR-BLOG-FULL-AUDIO.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>One of the things we do at <strong>SmokinLicious\u00ae<\/strong> for commercial-grade customers is take in a sample of their current smoking wood and analyze it.\u00a0 When you\u2019re a Company producing a food product, you need consistency of the final product.\u00a0 When it comes to smoked foods, this can be a challenge as wood is a plant material that can be highly variable when put through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/smoke-signals-learn-what-the-color-means-when-cooking-with-wood\/\">stages of combustion<\/a>.\u00a0 If a mixture of woods is used in the process, combustion rate, biochar production, volatile burn off, and other parameters of the wood can be affected in a negative way.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Like a Game of Roulette<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If a price is the only factor guiding your decision on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/10-things-to-consider-before-purchasing-wood-for-cooking-grilling-smoking\/\">wood supplier<\/a>, then you are playing a game of roulette.\u00a0 Just like any other business transaction, you should be looking for authenticity of the wood.\u00a0 Let me give you an example:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/2017\/11\/02\/how-germanys-wood-detectives-protecting-endangered-species\/824350001\/\">Germany is the only country currently taking direct steps to protect woods on the endangered species list<\/a>. \u00a0Yes, there is such a list of 183 countries participating in some level of enforcement.\u00a0 The direct goal of <strong>The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) <\/strong>is to prevent deforestation but the challenge, as with most lofty goals, is personnel to enforce the regulation.\u00a0Germany is uncovering case after case of fraudulent wood sales and finding that less expensive woods in the manufacture while invoices reflect another more expensive wood.<\/p>\n<p>Now, look at smoking wood products.\u00a0 There are no regulations.\u00a0 A company can package wood product of pretty much any condition, label it as a specific species, and put it into the marketplace.\u00a0 There is no accounting for:<\/p>\n<p>\u25aa how the wood was collected<\/p>\n<p>\u25aa what the wood pieces are made from<\/p>\n<p>\u25aa treatments conducted on the wood<\/p>\n<p>\u25aa if the wood is 100% of a specific species<\/p>\n<p>\u25aa the origination of the wood<\/p>\n<p>\u25aa the age of the wood<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Mixed Product Dominates<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I can\u2019t even count how many times we\u2019ve visited a Company\u2019s location to view their wood supply and find that what they thought they were purchasing is not what\u2019s present.\u00a0 Some suppliers have gone so far as to including softwoods in the product labeled as hardwood!\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t happen with just the larger pieces of wood either.\u00a0 Microchips commonly used in industrial smokehouses rarely contain 100% of a said wood.\u00a0 Perhaps this is the reason why packaging regulations for a smokehouse bacon or ham can state it is Applewood smoked when Applewood may have only made up 10% of the wood used in the smoking process!<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong><em>Ask and Demand<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The budget for wood can be substantial for companies and restaurants.\u00a0 You have every right to demand a product&#8217;s accountability.\u00a0\u00a0 Ask questions!<\/p>\n<p>What is the origin of the wood?\u00a0 Remember, many smoking wood suppliers are not involved in the manufacturing process.\u00a0 They are the seller, not the manufacturer meaning they likely have little or no knowledge of the history of the wood.<\/p>\n<p>Has the wood undergone any processes?\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smokinlicious.com\/blog\/can-hardwood-be-too-dry-for-cooking\/\">Kiln dried<\/a>? Preservation chemical added?
